What's outside

As soon as I saw @craigf’s post, I thought of shags, which we often saw on the Gower coast…We saw cormorants too, but shags more often. Being an ignoramus, is a shag the anhinga??? (That word makes me think of heart attacks!!!)
I agree with you about @tatjana’s helpfulness!!!
‘Our’ canal is the Crinan canal, famous for the Puffer - a steam boat plying the Clyde and the West Coast!! There was a comedy series about it on TV.
We are also near the introduced beavers. No - don’t expect pics, They are nocturnal!!! :grinning:

Diolch. I’m trying my best.

Ah, i so enjoy the welsh nature programes and always happy to watch them again hopefully understanding a bit more each time.

Now that would be a coup, surely draig’s are nocturnal as well as diurnal.
Understand where your canal is now and no i haven’t walked it (more time needed).

This morning was not without it’s surprise.

Elain - Fawn (on a bird island)
Ceirw - Deer.
Iwrch - Roe deer.

Cheers J.P.

Oh, that beats my Red Deer (ceirw coch?) which stood between me & one of my dogs some years back, while I had silent kittens!! Fortunately the deer departed before my little Cavalier King Charles noticed it!!

No the shag is like a small cormorant from what I’ve read. They have the hooked beak like a cormorant.

Ok, here’s my list from the Natur Cymru documentary. If you find any mistakes please let me know - diolch.

(Video is no longer available on International channel)

Edit: I’m going to keep adding to this list so, it goes beyond the Documentary now.
A word in square brackets [ ] means an optional word.

I have been adding links to pictures. I haven’t found a way to get them to open in a new tab/window by default. If you want to do this, you can do a right click on the link and your browser should give you a list with these options. Also, if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, they are usually clickable and that should open the link in a new tab as well.

@craigf Fantastic! I really like “cnocell a coed”, what a great word for woodpecker  I’m going to go watch this…

Yep, that is a great list and i like the way it’s formatted.
As you can edit it maybe people could suggest additions and it would grow. (interactive learning, and we all learn).
Glöynnod byw - Butterflies.

The only photo i could get of Mulfran - Cormorant this afternoon is distant and poor quality.

Mulfran ifanc - young Cormorant (notice a lot of white on it which can be rather confusing to anyone who has only seen adults).

Pibydd y dorlan - Common sandpiper.

Cheers J.P.

Great idea. I will probably divide it into sections. Flora, Fauna, Insects. Maybe even separate out Birds.

That’s really good (many thanks for your input).
I noticed in Iolo’s programes 'Pryfed gets translated as insects.
But in my book Pryfed - flies | Trychfilod - insects (guess we have a choice).

Oh and came upon an interesting one in a book i’m working with ( di-asgwrn-cefn = invertebrate ).
Just as i have typed it with the - - structure!

Cheers J.P.

My dictionary says the same. Pryfed for both and Trychfilod is a more technical term for insect.

When I saw the list of fish, I wondered about sewin, which I always thought was what the English call ‘sea trout’, but I looked in Y Geiriadur Mawr and it says sea trout is brithyll y mor and sewin is sewin or gwyniedyn or penllwyd. Looking up the other way round, sewin not listed as such, but gwyniedyn = sewin. Do we have any expert fishermen who can tell me the difference between a sewin and a sea trout???: :fishing_pole_and_fish: :grinning:

I’m no fisherman, but I have always fancied making a quilt with fish on it so that I could say I was sewing sewin. Iolo says about the Brithyll (Trout): “Mae dau wahanol fath: y brithyll brown sy’n treulio’i fywyd cyfan mewn dŵr croyw a’r siwin sy’n dychwelyd o’r môr i’n hafonydd i gladdu”.
Aren’t cwryglau (coracles) involved at some point too :rowing_man:t2::fishing_pole_and_fish: ?

Pincas Robin ar Rhosyn gwyllt - Robins pincushion on dog rose.
I have posted an image of these before but this was such a beautiful example.

Artichoke gall, sorry no welsh name yet, another on Oak (derwen) this time alter the bud so it is much bigger than normal.

Some very small (bach iawn) moths (gwyfynnod). Maybe from leaf mining larva (larfa).

Dail o Gwyddfid (leaf of honeysuckle) with leaf mines showing. The larva live between upper and lower surface of leaf.

Pimpla hypochondiaca or close relative. (Latin name only).

Lindys o gwyfyn Bidog llwyd - caterpillar of grey dagger moth.
Now in a box with some leaves and hopefully i will take a better photo tomorrow.

Cheers J.P.

I had finally plucked up the courage to upload a photo and caption in Welsh. It has taken time as I am not proficient in either, but I can’t upload a photo. I keep getting a message saying the file is too big. I really enjoy this thread and want to join in. Can you help?

Yes, of course.

Here’s everything you need to know - you have to resize photo to be (it says) 10 MB, however when I actually uploaded one it had to be only 1,2 MB. For resizing you need some software for handling graphics and photos (paint, paint.net, photoshop or somethin similar)

The best way to put photo here is to upload photo somewhere else (dropbox might be the best) and post the link here. Since software recognizes extensions it will appear as photo here, but you must only paste the link (copy/paste or drag/drop) and not use hyperlink finction. You have to give the particular photo the permition where you’ve uploaded it to be published and shared publicly of course. And, you might not try to post FB photos as they don’t appear on here as photos and if you don’t get proper link which is publicly accessible to all (even those who don’t have FB acounts) they might not be seen at all.

Sorry, Tatjana fach, I didn’t understand any of that, but I have found that if I e-mail a photo to myself, it seems to get smaller and I can then send it to this thread. I’m not saying it will always work, but it has a couple of times!!

To @ramblingjohn - I’m sure you’ve said what a Robin’s pincushion is, and I’m sure it’s not made by a robin, but, please, what is it???

Yn wir iawn!!! The nearest I’ve been to that was trying to shut up three Cavalier King Charles spaniels telling all of Gower about the spiny incomer to our garden about 15 years ago! I had to get an oven glove to lift the hedgehog and put him over the fence, while shutting up the dogs. Taking photos was not a high priority!!!
