Filming locations in Cardiff - where do you recommend?

We’ve got an incredibly exciting thing coming up - the fantastic people at wearebak.com (see https://vimeo.com/beawareproductions) are going to be doing some hugely generously low cost new videos for us…

And we’re looking for a couple of things from you… first, can you think of somewhere in Cardiff (but not a pub!) that could be a regular location? Ideally, it would be somewhere with a really positive attitude to the language, since they’re going to be getting a plug every time we run one of these ads! Coffee shop is probably the ideal, but anywhere people can socialise could work…

And then also…

Do you like to tread the boards? Do you have a bit of acting spirit - previously unleashed or not?!

Here’s the casting call:

We’re looking for professional or people with some acting or performance experience that can take part in a new campaign to promote SaySomethinginWelsh. Filming will take place on a single day in October. We’re specifically looking for the following:

Woman, mid thirties, mild South Wales accent.

Woman, mid thirties, English.

Woman, European, early to mid twenties

Man, mid thirties, Cardiff accent

Man, Late thirties, North Walian, native Welsh speaker

Woman, mid to late twenties, native Welsh speaker, South Wales.

Paid job.

The project is a pilot episode for an online series for learners. We will be offering free SSiW Welsh courses for the cast. [Or Spanish for the Welsh speakers!]

Please send photos and CV to info@wearebak.com

Not wanting to detract from the excitement of the project (because it is a great thing to be happening!), but I’m a little concerned about the casting ages - we have lots of older learners who are doing fabulously and I just think the videos should reflect that age is no barrier to language learning.

Just a thought.

It’s an excellent point, but don’t worry, there will be more videos. We had a good chat about the demographics of our target audiences

It’s a very valid thought and I’ll flag it up - it might be something for further refinement over the course of time…

How big? Chapter has a very positive attitude and has loads of space, occasionally has Welsh speaking staff on too.

Canna Deli is owned by Welsh speakers and often has a lot of Welsh speakers in there but it’s quite small.

Ffab, diolch  :star2:

There’s also Kin and Ilk on Cathedral Road that always has a Cymraeg Speech bubble in there. I’m sure they’d be supportive. Not massive.

How about Big Moose Coffee (just off Queen Street)? It’s a not for profit coffee shop, with proceeds going to help homeless & disadvantaged people, and they have some Welsh speaking staff.

With some Grecian 2000, botox and a corset, I’m told I could pass for 70
For a dramatic location, how about one of the cafes in the Millennium Centre?

Man, Mid 60’s, South Wales learner available and willing. I’m so close on this one - only 30 years out.:grinning:

I was going to suggest Chapter too, fabulous atmosphere most times of the day, and plenty of support for media and arts projects. Apart from the buzz of the cafe/restaurant, there are gallery rooms, studios and cinema screens. They run workshops and courses and there’s lots with a cymreig vibe. Busy on match days (football or rugby) which may be a good or a bad thing depending on what you’re aiming for.
There are several other small coffee shops (and pubs) nearby that would be supportive of welsh language.
