And if you speak it well enough in one area, you just ask when you move house! Or, well, I was 10+ when we moved to York. I learned to listen and use a bit of lateral thinking. The one I have mentioned elsewhere was when I finally worked out that the lads were saying "What d'they call thee?" And cried, "Oh! You want to know my name!" My Mam had much more trouble, being older. I often had to translate for her. But now in mid-Argyll, I still have to ask for translation of some Scots!!
