Past Tense advice

Really struggling with past tense.
When do you use oedd, wedi or short firm past tense? Any advice please

The oedd forms are when it has been an ongoing action (roedd/oedd/o’n i’n meddwl - I was thinking, roedd/oedd/o’n i’n gobeithio - I was hoping, etc), wedi is used to say you have done something (dwi wedi mynd - I have gone, dwi wedi stopio - I have stopped, etc.) The short form (es i - I went, dwedais i - I said) is when the action has been completed (I went, I said).
