Reading schemes

Hi, I’ve completed level 2 and I also go to an evening course. We are being encouraged to take part in a reading challenge called ‘Darllen Ymlaen’ where we read six books or articles and write about them. I thought to would help increase my vocabulary. I’m struggling to remember new words probably because they are not repeated as often as new vocab in the SSIW challenges.
Remembering my children’s reading schemes where new words are frequently repeated I was wondering if there is an equivalent scheme to the Biff, Chip and Kipper books in Welsh that I could work through?

You could try memrise.com - it uses flash cards to get vocab onto your long term memory. You can create your own course and just put in the words you want to learn. I use this for vocabulary I’ve picked up through reading, and I find it very helpful for helping me remember the words well enough to use them in conversation.

Thanks but I’ve tried memrise and duolingo and I don’t like either of them. I don’t find that single words in isolation don’t work for me and I need to read as part of the challenge, I would just prefer a more structured selection of reading.

There are a number of learners’ books available that state they are suitable for people studying mynediad, sylfaen and canolradd. If you look here you will find them

http://www.gwales.com/search_advanced/?sf_new_search=2&sf_category=WBD303&tsid=3

They are designed for adults and have new words and translations listed on each page and may be a more interesting read.

There’s also these

And some here too

I’ve read a few learners’ books myself. Generally no real problems and helped improve my vocabulary. Though knowing words such as stalker and chainsaw is somewhat questionable!

How about ‘e-ffrindiau’ by Lois Arnold? New words are repeated and the language slowly grows as you read through the book.

That’s great! Thanks so much.

I found the “Nofelau Nawr” series very good (e.g. Blodwen Jones).

Slightly different are the Stori Sydyn series by Y Lolfa. They come in both non-fiction and fiction titles, but you might want to look for the fiction books by Manon Steffan Ros, for example, e.g. “Hunllef” and “Inc”.

Also in Y Lolfa, and a bit longer, there is the Cyfres yr Onnen series (aimed at teenagers, I think).

None of the above is aimed at any particular courses. Just a way of getting into more vocabulary.
