Testing my proficiency

I’ve been learning Welsh on and off for years, mostly on my own. This means that I have no real idea what sort of level I’m at. I know there are holes in my knowledge, but not entirely sure where those holes are.

Are there any online tests I can do to get some idea of what level I’m actually at?

From time to time, I searched on-line myself, but haven’t been able to find any real self-assessment test for all skills or even just grammar and/or reading and listening.

What worked for me was joining on-line chat groups at different levels. I could just get an idea seeing how easy or difficult they seemed, and ask the tutor’s opinion when I got the chance.

It’s a bit more complicated to fine suitable ones, when living in different time zones, but there’s really a lot going on now from different Dysgu Cymraeg providers, Duolingo and others, and many participants from all over the world.

Past papers for all levels of the WJEC are available but I don’t know if the answers are given anywhere for you to check whether you’re right or not! https://www.wjec.co.uk/qualifications/welsh-for-adults-qualification-suite/#tab_overview Scroll to bottom of page, open “welsh for adults” then select your level. The papers can be found in key documents.
Also, I borrowed Gareth King’s Colloquial Welsh from my library. Not really my cup of tea but each chapter had lots of questions to test your knowledge and all the answers were in the back. I did work through quite a few of them but didn’t really enjoy it. There was an accompanying CD but I can’t comment on that as I have no CD player currently.

Thanks for the WJEC past papers link, Jenny!

I will confess, I do have all King’s books, but I was sort of hoping for a test so that I could then work out what to study, rather than going through the books to see what I already know, because as you say it’s a bit dull and not all that enjoyable. Maybe I just need to suck it up and start doing that.

There is this from Dysgu Cymraeg, but a couple of the sections are physically marked, so you may need to be enrolling in a course for those: https://learnwelsh.cymru/work-welsh/learn-welsh-level-checker-1/

And there’s this one, but I don’t know how in-depth it is: https://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/learnwelsh/level_test_pop/

Thanks, Deborah!

It looks like the LearnWelsh.cymru tests come when you sign up for a course, which I probably will do later this year. The BBC one, though, I got almost all the way through and it puts me at intermediate +, which feels about right for me.
