I’m from Somerset and I’m not entirely sure why I’m learning Welsh, but I’ve fallen in love with it. I suppose it started as a joke: I have a stepdaughter at university in Cardiff, and I’d been half-jokingly, half-seriously telling her to learn Welsh - an idea of which she was not very receptive. After pushing once too often she snapped “If you love Welsh so much, why don’t you bloody learn it?!”… so I am! And why not? It’s a language of past inhabitants of all of these islands, so it’s a link to my past whether I’m Welsh or not.
