Weekly Zoom Meetups in Australia

With the vastness of Australia, it’s hard for SSiWers to physically get together for meetups, but there is a weekly Zoom alternative. It’s been set at a time that will hopefully also work reasonably well for the different time zones. These are the current details (9 Nov 2021) with some states on Daylight Saving summer hours.

The Zoom meetup is on Tuesdays at:

4:30 pm - Western Australia
6:00 pm - Northern Territory
6:30 pm - Queensland
7:00 pm - South Australia
7:30 pm - Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory

The Zoom link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/3134295728
Meeting ID: 313 429 5728

I’ve updated the message above to say Tuesday. I presume the times are still accurate for now, but let me know when Daylight Saving ends and what the adjusted winter times should be.

Pob hwyl,

Deborah

April 3rd 2022. QLD, NSW, VIC, TAS and ACT all the same time (6:30 pm). NT and SA half an hour behind that (6 pm). WA 4:30 pm.

Pob hwyl a diolch

Andy

Shwmae,

Dw i’n byw yn Gorllewin Awstralia a dw i’n ddysgu Cymraeg ar Zoom gyda dosbarth yng Nghymru. Ond, does neb i ymarfer siarad â yma. Dw i’n orffen gwaith am chwech o’r gloch (amser Perth). Pan o’n i’n ddysgu gyda SSIW yn y gorffennol ro’n i’n gael pen tost arna I. Efallai dw i’n dypyn bach dwp. Ydy e’n unrhyw pwy eisiau ymarfer yn siarad Cymraeg ar y penwythnos?

Richard.

Shwmae Richard, dw i’n ymweld â theulu yn Perth ar hyn o bryd. Does dim llawer o amser sbâr 'da fi, ond os oes grŵp o bobl sy’n dysgu gyda ni yn Perth, falle gallen ni gwrdd rhywbryd ym mis Ebrill. Wyt ti’n byw yn Perth?

Hello Richard, I’m visiting family in Perth at the moment. I don’t have a lot of spare time, but if there’s a group of people learning Welsh with us in Perth, maybe we could meet sometime in April. Do you live in Perth?

Ydw. Dw i’n byw yn Perth. Bydd i’n ymweld Cymru yn ganol mis Ebrill. Dw i’n gwybod dim ond fi yn ddysgu Cymraeg yma ar hyn o bryd. Dw i’n hapus cwrdd am coffi yn Perth am clonc.

O’n i’n eitha siŵr oedd mwy o SSiWers yn Perth ond falle na - drueni! Hala fy rhif ffôn ata i mewn PM a na i gysylltu â ti. Bydd yn dda i ti gael siarad bach o Gymraeg cyn i ti fynd!

I was rather sure there were more SSiWers in Perth but perhaps not - pity! Send me your phone number in a PM and I’ll contact you. It will be good for you to speak a little Welsh before you go!

Diolch. I think you’re right about there being SSiWers in Perth but I’m not one so I don’t know them. I’m learning with Ceredigion Dysgu Cymraeg on Zoom but if you’re learning a language you should reach out to others from different groups I think. I shall work out how to send you my number. I’m new to this site.[quote=“Deborah-SSi, post:8, topic:33674, full:true”]

Mae’n flin gyda fi ond I can’t work out how to send a PM. If someone could give me instructions I’d appreciate it. Rhy hen i deall technoleg dw i’n meddwl.

If you click on the person’s avatar or name you’ll get a little popup window with a button saying ‘Message’. Click on that button and you’ll get a textbox to type your Private Message into.

· An alternative way, if you know the person’s forum name, is to click on your Avatar and directly below it you will see the Private Message envelope symbol. Click on that and it will show you a list of the most recent Private Message exchanges you’ve had. To the left is a ‘New Message’ button, and clicking on that will give you the same Private Message textbox.

The Private Message textbox looks exactly like the usual forum post textbox except you’ll see that it has ‘Message’ with a little envelope icon at the bottom instead of ‘Reply’.
Private Messages - Receiving

When someone sends you a private message, you should receive an email advising you of it. There will be a link in the email that will take you directly to that message on the forum, and if you reply there it will become a private written conversation between you.

Another way to see if you’ve been sent a private message is by clicking on your avatar. That will give you a dropdown list of recent activity with the different symbols shown in Recent Interactions (above). Any Private Messages will have the envelope symbol alongside them.

Sorry Deborah but I’m struggling to get the hang of the messaging system. Still new to it. If you’re in Perth and know somewhere you feel comfortable to meet for a coffee please let me know and I’ll buy you a coffee. I’m in the northern suburbs of Perth but the centre is easy to get to at the weekend. Richard.

I can set up to do some Zoom chats on weekends so those of Perth can sgwrs with the Eastern States.

If you use Welsh Speaking Practice and make yourself known through great-southern-land.

Hi Andy,

Diolch. I’m still trying to work out how to use the site to send messages but I’ve got a plan. I’m going to ask a young person. Hopefully soon. I’ll be in touch. Hwyl.

@ricardoinperth sorry we didn’t manage to meet up in the end. I’ve been organising things with family and friends, so it all became a bit tricky. I hope you enjoy your time in Cymru!

Another update on Australia meet ups - only through the Internet, unfortunately, although there is a near-Hobart group that meets monthly, and is generally attended by folk involved in the Kingborough U3A Advanced Welsh class. I posted this recently on the great-southern-land channel on the Slack Welsh Speaking Practice site: A small group of us from across Australia meet via Zoom for an hour on Monday and/or Wednesday evenings - 7pm Queensland time (the ‘and/or’ is because some of us join both times and a couple of us only once a week). We are a very friendly lot and chat (sometimes more, sometimes less yn y Gymraeg!) for a little bit before continuing to work our way through children’s books, which is fun but also quite a challenge as the grammar is not standard!! Whether you join us on the Zoom probably depends more on your confidence and/or desire to socialise online than your knowledge of Welsh as we always muck in to help each other.

The Melbourne Welsh Learners community join Pop Up Gaeltacht (Irish speaking area) for a monthly informal chat and drink every month. Very fun, very casual - details on Pop Up Gaeltacht Facebook & Instagram.
