Welsh Rock Music

Hi Folks, I’m a big rock fan and now a big Welsh rock fan. I love the likes of Crys, Mellt, Yr Eira, Candelas and now my faves are Calfari. I have been able to get hold of Calfari’s ep “Tan” which is great but I can’t get hold of either “Nôl ac ymlaen” or “Gorwelion” on cd to my great frustration. I have tried Ebay, Amazon and the Na-Nog siop in Caernarvon to no avail.
Can anyone advise where else I could try please?

My local Welsh shop got hold of ‘Tân’ and ‘Gorwelion’ for me so I guess Na-Nôg or Palas Print in Caernarfon could do the same. (I bought ‘Nôl ac ymlaen’ off them direct when they played in Wrexham a few years ago.)

For other rockers out there, there was some really good stuff in the 80s:

Y Diawled: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngq9bsYH9As
Yr Anhrefn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T7wHuvUJ5M, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4yVci4THzA
Maffia Mr Huws: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhPj7ABz84g

However a lot of the lesser well known groups has singles released on vinyl only. Sain Records have a few compilation albums which make a good introduction (www.sainwales.com and iTunes).

And how about some modern Breton punk? les Ramoneurs de Menhirs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6pJ4PriGzQ

Modern Welsh rock- check out Sŵnami https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ccGXDNyNzQ and Yr Angen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaFcX5u5onk

A couple more slightly heavier ones are “I fight lions” and “After an alibi”. Both bands have stuff on Spotify if you want to have a listen.

I’ve got the I fight lions album (self titled) and it’s a bilingual affair alternating between Welsh and English songs from start to finish. I prefer the sound of After an alibi but failed to find a hard copy of their stuff a while back.

I Fight Lions have got a new single out on the 20th, by the way.

I’ve heard a snippet and I’ll reserve final judgement till I hear it in full but as a first impression … :unamused:

We’ll see.

Thanks for these replies guys. I will definitely be checking out I fight Lions and After an alibi in the next couple of days via Spotify. Diolch yn fawr iawn.

Diolch yn fawr. We are listening to Clic and music to tune ourselves in.

Recordiau Rhys Mwyn on Radio Cymru. 2 days left ofhis November programme devoted to the blues y blŵs. Great weekly programme anyway and he was interviewed by Beca for SSIW Advanced. She is an inspiring interviewer - always interesting interviews.
